An interesting section through a piece of Sycamore trunk that has become spalted - this where fungal infections have got into the tree when it was alive. This typically results in dark colour lines of stains clearly visible in the freshly cut wood.

I did not think that the effect of spalting would be visible on any relief printst but it certainly is, as the fungal infection has effected the texture of the wood leading to unusual sections of softer and harder wood - giving a mottled effect which is not unattractive.

When sanding and preparing splated wood we should take great care not to inhale thedust as it can contain fungal spores.
