ABOUT VISIBULL

Welcome to Visibull - the creative business launched in 2021 by Julian Bull and based in North Worcestershire in the heart of what was historically known as the Forest of Feckenham.

From my studio, nestling under a walnut tree, I create relief prints of trees – with many variations of species, size and colour.

Every print is handmade and unique due to the variations in inking and print pressure. The results may be considered a fingerprint or scan of the tree trunk at a particular point along the trunk including evidence of the effects of insects or man.

Most of the wood I am using is from trees already felled and most of it comes from the historic wooded region known as the Forest of Feckenham in medieval times and is now in North Worcestershire.

Why trees? - well aside from being beautiful, fundamentally they release oxygen to allow us to exist, so in an era of increased and vital focus on climate change should we not all examine our environment more and act on what we find? If trees are the lungs of the world, then recent events should highlight why lungs are especially precious.

What if we stopped and tried to look inside, taking a cross section across a trunk? What is revealed are many hidden secrets in the history of that tree- its age, evidence of stress and human intervention. In short, it’s very like a CT scan of a human torso giving us insight into what may be inside a trunk at that point, and the resulting images can be surprising – exposing the natural beauty within.

Aside from classic black and white prints I also love working with colour and in addition to the coloured images I offer for sale here, you can choose any colour for any of my wood blocks as well as choosing black or white frames or you can choose to buy a bare print, shipped in a protective postal tube.

For a different take, my prints are also available mounted on a lightbox to give a striking image just like an X-Ray of the tree, reminding us to examine the health of the planet.

Thanks to the late Bryan Nash-Gill an American artist who pioneered tree ring prints.

I also enjoy printing wood in the form of antique wooden letterpress as well as designing greeting cards, bags, and t-shirts. All items have a focus on nature and are created using sustainable methods and materials.

Thanks for looking, Julian 2021
