SPALTED HORNBEAM side table - live edge, tree stump, natural sculptural, ancient woodland
FREE UK SHIPPING
This table is made from a section of Hornbeam from a tree that grew in the ancient woodland at Wytham Woods just outside of Oxford.
Wytham is owned by Oxford University who carry out many important long term experiments around climate change and other nature based sciences. You have to apply for a pass to visit.
I was invited by the team there to memorialise several of their fallen trees through relief prints (see black prints section) and by crafting a table.
This Hornbeam tree used to dominate the main Gibson Gate entrance to Wytham Woods but sadly fell around 4 years ago. The unusual patterning you can see on this table is caused by 'spalting' - this is where the tree was infected by a variety of fungi in its later years. Where 2 different fungi meet it causes dark lines, and this infection no doubt contributed to the death of the tree.
It is now free from fungi and available for someone to enjoy in their home - quite a well known tree and a highly unusual table.
There is also a second similar section so a second table is possible.
If you wish to view the piece then this can be arranged in the B96 area of Redditch, Worcs.
Dimensions - to extends to 64 × 62cm and height to top is 38cm. It features turned Beech legs which can be unscrewed.
